Description
New Mexico, considered part of the American Southwest region, calls itself "The Land of Enchantment". This is a Rocky Mountains state, with Arizona, Colorado, Oklahoma, Texas and the country of Mexico on its borders.

New Mexico has very diverse terrain: high mountain ranges in the north, Sonoran Desert in the south, parts of the Great Plains in the east, magnificent canyons to the west-- and the famous Rio Grande which runs right through the center of the state from north to south. You will find everything from lava flows to hot springs, mysterious rock formations to spectacular Fall colors, sophisticated shopping and arts centers to rustic trading posts, modern cities to ancient Pueblo dwellings-- all under the bluest skies imaginable.

In the north central part of the state, sitting at the base of the Rocky Mountains, is the capital city of New Mexico. Officially "La Villa Real de la Santa Fe de San Francisco de Asis," or "The Royal City of the Holy Faith of Saint Francis of Assisi," it has always been called simply "Santa Fe", the City Different.

The region around Santa Fe offers some of the best skiing and snowboarding in the country. New Mexico's highest mountain, Wheeler Peak at 13,161 feet in the Sangre de Cristo mountains, dominates the landscape of the "Enchanted Circle" between Taos and Angel Fire. Santa Fe itself sits at an elevation of 6,718 feet (2047.6 meters) and has a population of around 67,000.

World-renowned for its art galleries and marketplaces, Santa Fe is the second oldest "European" city in the United States (only St. Augustine in Florida is older), having been founded in 1607 by Spaniards. (For comparison, the much vaunted Mayflower didn't make it to the US shores until 1620). Chosen as a provincial capital in 1609 by Spanish governor Don Pedro de Peralta, it is the oldest continuously operating seat of government in the United States.

Though the city's history spans nearly 400 years, it is still relatively unknown to many travelers-- both from the USA and internationally. People who visit the city for the first time are often surprised by what they find, including its Rocky Mountain climate and geography and the cultural diversity created by a mix of Native American, Hispanic and European traditions. In town the city offers a historic past and rich culture to absorb, with theater, dance and music and an Opera House, all playing a significant role in both Santa Fe's past and present. The importance of art here has made the city one of the country's largest art markets. The landscapes here are those that inspired the art of Georgia O'Keefe, among others.

Within the historic center of Santa Fe there is a treasure trove of delights to explore. The palacio built by de Peralta highlights the plaza at the center of Santa Fe. This unique community offers wonderful entertainment, eclectic shops and galleries and cozy and flavorful restaurants. Boutiques, trading posts, jewelry stores, and street vendors offer beautiful ware that evoke the area's Native American and Spanish heritage. Southwestern crafts, decorative items for the home and wardrobe, and diverse artwork can be found in the many small galleries.

Museums open windows to the past, as do churches, missions, homes, and the original Palace of the Governors. Guided walking tours trace the steps once followed by the Po-Pe warriors, conquistadors, and the combatants who fought the most important Civil War battle in the Southwest.

By law, all new structures in the center of Santa Fe must be built from adobe.

Native American cultures were prominent in the region for thousands of years before the arrival of Europeans, and their influence is greatly felt to this day. Besides a variety of "Pueblo" cultures, the main Native Americans in the area are the Apache and the Navajo. For an excellent rundown on the Native American cultures of New Mexico (and Santa Fe), visit this link: http://www.newmexico.org/culture/indianculture.html It's very good, and you'll enjoy it. Visit the Pueblo Cultural Center Web site at http://www.indianpueblo.org to learn about the history and culture of the Pueblo Indians. To quote from this Web site: "Today, after suffering disruption by gold-seeking Europeans, alien Indian tribes and Anglo-American westward expansion, the Pueblo people are settled in nineteen communities, some of which have been continuously inhabited since long before the discovery of America. Still retaining their ancient and largely secret ceremonial life, they nevertheless welcome visitors from all over the world, and offer a glimpse of the proud heritage which they have kept alive for more than a thousand years."

Surrounded as it is by literally millions of acres of National Forest and public land, Santa Fe is also a jumping off point for a number of different outdoor recreational activities. For sightseeing, the beauty of the surrounding area offers an amazing diversity of scenery and places to discover and there are inumerable ways of seeing it: on foot, horseback, skis, snowshoes, bicycle, tour van or even in a hot air balloon. You can also ride the 120-year-old spur of the Santa Fe Railroad from Santa Fe to Lamy through the scenic New Mexico countryside.

New Mexico has 24 state-designated Scenic and Historic Byways committed to preserving and promoting the historic, cultural and natural assets located on or near them. One of these that is handy to Santa Fe is The Turquoise Trail; drive the back route from Albuquerque to Santa Fe through the majestic Sandia Mountains to visit the revived "ghost" mining towns of New Mexico. Visit museums; see local arts and crafts, theatre, music, and restaurants. This is a route that is fun for everyone. We heartily recommend it! http://www.turquoisetrail.org

We will be staying in an elegant RCI Resort of International Distinction that will put you within easy reach of everything this remarkable city has to offer. Otra Vez en Santa Fe is a small project consisting of 18 condominiums only a short walk from Santa Fe's Historic Plaza (and a mere 16 miles from the slopes if you're into skiing). At the corner of Galisteo and Water streets, above two narrow intersecting streets in the heart of historic downtown Santa Fe, Otra Vez occupies the second and third floors of a relatively "new" Santa Fe building, circa 1923, above Harry's, a chic men's store, and Foreign Traders, which sells high quality Mexican furniture, collectibles and accessories.

Among the attractions of this resort are a sun terrace with a year-round, outdoor hot tub and barbecues. Each 1- or 2-bedroom condo is elegantly decorated in modern Southwestern style with hand-crafted furniture (some have fireplaces). Each has a full kitchen with microwave, dishwasher and cooking and eating utensils, and daily maid service, access to free laundry facilities and parking are also included. No two are exactly alike, which takes you away from the "cookie cutter" feel of some larger resorts.

This is a delightful resort which gets lots of word-of-mouth approval from guests. You might want to give it a try yourself, but book early-- it fills up fast.
